Oran Pre-Cast were involved from an early stage in the tender process for this design and build project. The proposed precast package offered both programme and cost benefits to the main contractor.
The contract consisted of the design and manufacture of approximately 7,500m2 of precast lattice flooring, 150 columns, 60 edge beams and 5 twinwall cores.
Key design features included:
-
A precast flat slab system,
-
8.7m by 6.6m bays,
-
Floor recesses for laboratory equipment,
-
Strict floor vibration criteria,
-
2.6m slab cantilevers to building perimeter,
3.3m x 10.5m lattice floor elements.
Oran Pre-Cast were delighted to be involved in the design and construction of the concrete structure of this unique and architecturally striking building in central London.

A number of precast products were used in this building including twinwall, lattice flooring and hollowcore.
The distinctive folds and inclines of the superstructure required an accurate 3 dimensional model of the concrete frame. True views of all of the concrete surface planes were created, from which individual production drawings for each precast element were created. A robotic plotting machine then plotted the outline of each unique panel shape onto the steel production beds.
A finite element structural model of the inclined surfaces was created by the in house design team, to assess the reinforcement required in the precast members.
Oran Pre-Cast's expertise in the following areas contributed to a successful concrete structure:
-
Drafting and design using 3 dimensional software packages,
-
Bespoke lattice floor and twinwall products,
-
Just in time site delivery,
Oran Pre-Cast were delighted to be involved in the construction of the New Engineering Building on the NUI, Galway campus. A number of former engineering students from the university were involved in the delivery of the project

The concrete structure consisted of in-situ column and wall elements combined with a composite precast flat slab solution. Oran Pre-Cast designed and manufactured approximately 10,500m2 of precast lattice flooring for this state of the art building.
Key design features included:
-
Clear spans of up to 13m
-
A sloping 7.5m cantilevered floor
-
280 to 510mm high flat slab system
-
Exposed concrete finish
-
Construction tolerance of just 5mm
Various cutting edge techniques were employed throughout the build, including one of the first uses in Ireland of a voided slab system. The cobiax void former technology reduced the volume of concrete required by approximately 1,000m3. The resulting reduction in self-weight allowed for increased spans and smaller foundations. The long term performance of the slab is being monitored using instrumentation cast into the concrete slab.
