This large mixed use development is spread over an 8 acre site in the centre of Athlone town. The reduction in on-site works associated with precast concrete construction, in-terms of both material and labour, was of immense value on this congested town centre site.
Oran Precast supplied and delivered directly to the main contractor.
The exposed precast concrete perimeter beams play an important role in defining the external elevations of this commercial building

The exposed nature of the beams meant that special consideration had to be given to cast in items, such as temporary bracing sockets and lifters. The location of joints and chamfer details was also of high importance. The connection to the internal concrete slab incorporated a structural thermal break element. Oran Pre-Cast relied on years of experience in the mixed use sector to deliver one of our most complex projects to date. The floor layout and building geometry varied greatly between the 7 levels, leading to a large number of bespoke elements and some significant transfer structures.
Our in house design team created a detailed 3-dimensional model to aid the design process. The model was invaluable when it came to designing and detailing the more complex elements and connections. The Tekla software package automatically generated production drawings of the various elements which greatly sped up the detailing process.
Key design features included:
-
2no. 40 tonne transfer beams
-
Cantilevering lattice floor design
-
Bespoke downstand and cantilevering edge beams
-
Allowance for future vertical expansion
-
Exposed circular columns
